LT Oil Pumps

GM Gen V LT engines use a variable-displacement oil pump to reduce parasitic power loss and improve efficiency. The pump contains an internal control valve and adjustable pumping chamber that allow it to operate in either a low-pressure or high-pressure mode. During normal driving conditions, the pump runs in low-pressure mode, supplying only the oil volume needed by the engine. When engine speed, load, oil temperature, or demand increase, the control valve shifts the pump into high-pressure mode, increasing oil flow and pressure to protect critical engine components. By matching oil output to engine requirements, the variable oil pump helps improve fuel economy while maintaining proper lubrication under all operating conditions.

There are at least four (4) unique wet sump oil pumps and two (2) unique dry sump oil pumps from GM. For wet sump pumps there are "early" Gen 5 and "late" Gen 5 Plus designs for oil pumps, then among those are "car" and "truck" pumps, with truck pumps being a higher pressure calibration than car pumps. The Gen 5 Plus 5.3L (L82 L84) did not make use of the variable output system. Among dry sump pumps there are "early" C7 corvette pumps with a single scavenge pump and "late" C8 corvette pumps with twin scavenge pumps. All "late" pumps are dowel located to the engine block while early style pumps are not.
